A single page — or two, the debate never ends — that attempts to compress a human life into bullet points optimized for a robot that will reject it before any human reads it. The practice of embedding job description language verbatim into the resume so the ATS recognizes it as a match. A ritual performed entirely for a machine that will be replaced next year. Results in resumes that read like they were written by the job posting itself, which is increasingly accurate.

One column or two. Serif or sans-serif. One page or two. Color or no color. PDF or Word. These questions have no correct answer and consume approximately 40% of all resume creation time. The format is irrelevant. The ATS does not care. Format Anxiety does not know this.

The part of the resume that accounts for the time the economy collapsed, a pandemic happened, a family needed care, or the applicant simply could not find work despite trying. Must be explained. Must be framed positively. Must not sound like what it was.

A line that has appeared at the bottom of resumes since the beginning of time. References are never requested at this stage. Everyone knows this. The line remains. It is the objective statement of the footer. Immortal. Purposeless. Present.
