Lou is a construction operator, licensed plumber, and real estate developer of the old school variety — the kind where the license is current, the permits are mostly filed, and the relationship with the inspector goes back far enough that neither party needs to make it weird. He is not a criminal. He is a businessman with a very large shovel and a flexible definition of the timeline. Lou carries the Double Trouble Shovel, a heavy-duty dual-function excavation instrument suitable for breaking ground on a new development or ending a conversation that has gone on too long. He likes dogs. He also likes cops, in the specific way that a man who has been in construction long enough knows which relationships are worth maintaining over a very long lunch. Lou does not climb mountains through official channels. He finds the easiest path, acquires the adjacent parcel, and builds something on it. The Under Writer is a rubberized smart sleeve that fits snugly over the shaft of any pencil or pen, converting a standard writing utensil into a voice-activated AI measurement companion with an LCD display, a speaker, a button, a number wheel, a flashlight, and a find-my scream function that has been described by users as extremely effective and by people nearby as alarming. The sleeve is compatible with the Under Writer Woody, a standard pencil; the Under Writer Chunky, a wide-body construction pencil for operators who need a larger grip and a bolder statement; and the Under Writer Inky, a pen-format version for ink-preferred environments. The sleeve specification is open to future writing utensil form factors that have not yet been dreamt up. To activate, shake the unit vigorously. The onboard kinetic generator harvests the mechanical energy of a vigorous shake and feeds it to the AI voice recognition module, which listens for spoken measurements, notes, and commands and renders them on the LCD display in real time. Tap the button once to activate the integrated flashlight. Tap twice to disable voice recognition and conserve power for situations where the job site is too loud for voice input or the operator simply does not want to talk anymore. The Number Wheel provides manual input and scroll navigation on the display for environments where voice is unavailable or inadvisable. The Hey Pencil feature activates when the operator yells the words Hey Pencil or Hey Pen at any volume sufficient to be heard in a construction environment, triggering a 1,000 decibel locator scream from the speaker so the operator can find the unit wherever it was set down, dropped, rolled, or borrowed by someone who did not say they were borrowing it. A vibration motor supplements the scream on job sites loud enough to require it.
