Retina Scanner
Type: component
PROBLEM
Voter identity needs to be confirmed instantly without physical contact or a line.
SOLUTION
The Retina Scanner is a near-infrared biometric iris and retina imaging unit mounted at eye height on the Voter Rotor station entry gate, performing contactless identity verification in under two seconds by capturing a high-resolution near-infrared image of the voter's iris pattern and comparing it against the enrolled biometric template in the voter roll database via encrypted API call over the onboard WiFi connection. The unit guides the voter to the correct scanning position via a green LED ring that illuminates when the eye is in the optimal focal plane and a soft chime when capture is complete. No physical contact is required. No data is stored on the unit after the verification transaction completes. The biometric template comparison result is a binary match or no-match, and only the result, not the image, is logged. The scanner accommodates voters wearing glasses and most contact lens types, and includes a fallback prompt to the ID scanner for voters whose iris pattern cannot be reliably captured, which occurs in approximately 2 percent of the general population and the documentation says this without judgment.
