The articulated arm needs multiple independent drive sources to cover its full range of motion.
SOLUTION
The Motor Array is the distributed drive system powering each joint in the Turn Pike Hinge Array, consisting of five brushless DC servo motors each paired with a harmonic drive gear reduction unit providing high torque at low speed with zero backlash, meaning the arm moves precisely where the operator's head tracking commands it and stops there without drift or oscillation. Each motor operates independently from a shared 48-volt DC bus with per-motor current limiting that prevents overload in the event of a jam, foreign object intrusion, or an unusually large driver who leans into the arm during the payment transaction. The full array draws approximately 180 watts at peak simultaneous actuation across all joints and under 20 watts in hold position. Position is logged continuously and the control system detects abnormal load signatures indicating potential collisions and halts the arm before contact, which protects both the unit and the driver and also the operator's sense of what happened.
