Drivers pull up to toll booths at different positions and the unit needs to reach all of them.

SOLUTION

The Hinge Array is a multi-joint articulated arm assembly consisting of five independently motorized pivot joints connecting the Turn Pike base mount to the tablet and camera head assembly, providing a combined range of motion sufficient to reposition the unit face from a compact resting position flush with the booth structure to a fully extended operating position at driver window height for any vehicle from a compact car to a commercial truck cab without the operator doing anything except moving their head. Each joint is a sealed brushless servo motor rated for continuous outdoor operation with position feedback accurate to 0.5 degrees. The arm carries the full cable harness for power, data, and audio internally through sealed conduit channels in each segment so there are no external cables to snag, freeze, or attract attention. The resting position folds the arm to a compact profile that does not impede vehicle clearance in the lane, which was a regulatory requirement that came up during the permitting process and required a redesign of joint three.
